Inquiry: The Essential Question

The goal of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) is to have you be more involved in your own learning: creating essential questions, investigating widely, and building new knowledge. That knowledge is used to answer your question, to develop a solution or to support a position or point of view; and it is usually presented to others and may result in some sort of action.

IBL begins with an important question. In this case, I will be providing the question.

A good inquiry question is one that...

• interests you.

• you can find reliable information about by doing research.

• you don't already know the answer to.

• has multiple possible answers, not just yes/no.

• has a clear focus.
